The History:
On September 6, 1948, test pilot John Derry flew the de Havilland DH.108 ‘Swallow’ (VW120) through the sound barrier, making history as the first British pilot and aircraft to officially achieve supersonic flight.
Only three of these experimental research aircraft were built to evaluate the high and low-speed characteristics of swept-back wings. They were pushed to their absolute limits in uncharted territory by courageous pilots—three of whom tragically lost their lives, including Chief Test Pilot Geoffrey Raoul de Havilland during a practice run for the world air speed record.
