It is said that memories fade with advancing years. To a certain extent I can vouch for the truth of that statement. Even the traumas of flying through the Battle of Britain were relegated to the back of my mind until, that is, I was introduced to the aviation art of Philip West. Philip was kind enough to depict my personal Spitfire in many of his truly superb paintings. Immediately memories and visions of those dramatic days of September 1940 were rekindled with a clarity that I did not consider possible. The accuracy, attention to detail and realism, together with the overall background of his paintings enables one to recall how one felt and how it actually was as an operational fighter pilot in those dramatic days in the nation’s history.

Squadron Leader Geoffrey Wellum DFC

Philip has a friendly and genuinely easy-going personality. His astonishingly exceptional artistic talent, coupled with thorough and methodical research into his topics, result in a highly detailed and accurate portrayal of his subjects.

Keith & Margaret Mottershead, Macclesfield

Philip undertook a piece of work for me and it was incredible. He is a great artist.

Nick Holmes, Bournemouth.

I’ve admired and collected Philip’s paintings for quite a few years now, and I continue to enjoy them to this day. Detail and atmosphere are treated with equal measure. That’s what I like…

Ron Mitchell, Rotherham.

One of Philip West’s best prints is “Spitfires – High Patrol.” I was leading Spitfires of 124 Squadron when we were protecting our bombers in daylight over occupied Europe.

Wing Commander Peter Ayerst DFC. Hurricane and Spitfire Pilot

Through his artistic skill Philip West has managed to capture the wonderful atmosphere that surrounds some of the world’s most famous aircraft.

Flt. Lt. Frank Newman. Spitfire Pilot

Philip West’s knowledge of aviation generally and 617 Squadron generally has produced a number of interesting and sensitive paintings. He is always faithful to his subject and accurate in their depiction.

Sqn. Ldr. Benny Goodman. Lancaster Pilot, 617 Squadron

Philip West’s paintings are so true to life, I’m transported back to the excitement of youth and flying the Mosquito!

Flt. Lt. Ted Dunford DFC. Mosquito Pilot

Philip’s skill in painting aircraft with such detailed accuracy is really quite amazing. I find his work, including the backgrounds featured, to be very evocative, moving and highly commendable.

Sqn. Ldr. Percy Beake DFC. Spitfire Pilot

Every print I have signed captures the atmosphere of that time exactly, bringing it all back. Thank you Philip.

Flt. Lt. Philip Ainley DFC. Lancaster Pilot
