Heroic Endeavour  – On March 25th 1944 a specially modified de Havilland Mosquito FB.VI, flown by Test Pilot Captain Eric Melrose “Winkle” Brown, made the world’s first twin-engine fighter/bomber landing on an aircraft carrier.  HMS Indefatigable for the sea trials. Bringing a twin-engine Mosquito onto the wires would turn out to be as dangerous for him as it was for Captain Brown. With big Merlin engines protruding from the wings, the pilot would have had difficulty seeing the batsman in his usual position at the deck edge, so Lt. Cdr. Everett volunteered to signal, standing near the centre-line, right down to the ‘cut’ then run for his life whilst ducking under the Mosquito’s passing port wing. One of the main challenges was managing the Mosquito’s approach speed. In the landing configuration the aircraft’s stall speed was 110 mph whilst the carrier’s arrestor wires demanded nothing greater than 83 mph; combine this with the type’s potential operational weight up to 20,000lb, and the mission appeared impossible…
