Mach One  – Test pilot John Derry and the de Havilland DH108 ‘Swallow’ VW120 breaking the sound barrier on 6th September 1948 to become the first British aircraft and pilot officially to achieve supersonic flight. Just three of these experimental research aircraft were built to explore high and low speed characteristics of sweptback wings. They were flown to their limits and beyond, into unknown territories of speed by skilful and courageous pilots, three of whom paid with their lives, including chief test pilot Geoffrey Raoul de Havilland in a practice flight for the world air speed record.
