MITCHELL’S MASTERPIECE The prototype Supermarine Type 300 K5054, powered by the newly-developed Rolls-Royce PV-XII V-12 engine, soon to become known as the Merlin, took to the sky for the first time on the 5th March 1936 from Eastleigh Aerodrome. At the controls on this historically important test flight was Vickers chief test pilot Joseph “Mutt” Summers. Following an eight minute sortie, he recommended a number of fairly minor refinements but overall he was satisfied the Type 300 had great potential. He flew the aircraft four times before handing over trials flights to Geoffrey Quill and George Pickering, who went on to recommend further modifications and improvements that would turn the aircraft into a thoroughbred fighting machine of great agility, power and graceful line. The Spitfire legend was born… Here we see K5054 flying over the Isle of Wight, looking North along the Solent towards Eastleigh Aerodrome – now Southampton Airport.
