During World War Two, the Allies soon realised that to gain an advantage against Axis forces, up-to-date intelligence would be vital, thus enabling forces to be deployed against the right target in good time. Part of that effort came in the unmistakable classic shape of RAF Photographic Reconnaissance (PRU) Spitfires. With great skill and courage their pilots ranged far and wide to take photographs of numerous targets including enemy armour and troop movements, shipping, industry, V1 sites, communication, command and control infrastructure.
Philip writes… “I have been very fortunate to meet many PRU Spitfire pilots at our signing events over the years and they never failed to impress with their enthusiasm and good humour. I wanted to try and paint something that summed up their heroic exploits – flying out there, on their own in a Spitfire, armed only with their wits, courage and a camera, more often than not at great personal risk to life and limb. Their vital contribution can never be underestimated.”
