Stirling Warrior – The Short Stirling was the first of the RAF’s big four-engined bombers produced. It was something of a pioneer in how to operate such a large aircraft in combat conditions. Many hard fought lessons were learnt in those early days of World War Two before the advent of the Lancaster and Halifax. The Stirling’s air and ground crews served with distinction and courage in many diverse roles throughout the war from bomber, special operation executive flights, glider-tug, mine-layer and troop-carrier. Total production of bomber versions amounted to 1,759 airframes.
