WHITE LEADER VECTOR 340Flight Lieutenant Terence “Terry” Spencer of 41 Squadron dives down in his Spitfire XII, EB-L, MB878, to intercept a V-1 flying bomb on the 19th August 1944. This would be his fourth individual Diver victory. On this patrol, Spencer was accompanied by WO Pat Coleman in EN228. They were orbiting the Ashford area at 6,000 feet waiting for the morning’s usual first wave of flying bombs. Almost an hour into their patrol, Kingsley Control vectored them onto an inbound V-1. Diving down over Appledore, Kent, Spencer intercepted the V-1, quarter astern at 2,000 feet. He opened fire with a two-second burst, then closing to 250 yards, fired a one second burst. Suddenly the V-1 blew up and spun in, crashing into open ground to the NNW of High Halden airfield.

Spencer ended the war as a Squadron Leader DFC with seven confirmed V-1 victories, plus another recorded, but not credited.  One V-1 victory of particular note occurred on 9th August 1944, Spencer had run out of ammunition and used his Spitfire’s wing tip to topple the V-1 off course and send it crashing.  This victory was recorded in Spencer’s log-book by Flight Commander Flt Lt Tom Slack in the form of a sketch entitled ‘TIP ‘EM UP TERRY’.

Spencer also scored one confirmed Fw190 aerial victory and one Ju88 destroyed on the ground.
