Squadron Leader Geoffrey Wellum turns his Spitfire for home after another gruelling day of air combat during the Battle of Britain. In August 1939, aged only 18 years old Geoffrey joined the RAF on a short service commission. Following completion of his training he was posted to 92 (East India) Squadron flying Spitfires. During the Battle of Britain he was officially credited with 3 enemy aircraft destroyed, 4 probably destroyed and several damaged earning him the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). In August 1941 he was posted to 52 Operational Training Unit (OTU) as an instructor and in the following year he became a Flight Commander with 65 Squadron, flying fighter sweep sorties over enemy territory. In August 1942 he embarked HMS Furious to lead 8 Spitfires to Luqa (Malta). Whilst continuing combat missions there he experienced extreme physical and mental fatigue, a major part of which was diagnosed as suffering severe sinusitis. Following an operation, Doctors removed him from flying duties… Subsequently, Geoffrey was returned to the UK where he successfully recovered and was employed by Gloster Aircraft, testing Hawker Typhoons and would later become a gunnery instructor until the end of the war.
